Oceana Park Welsh Stud was established in 1997 with the purchase of our first registered Welshies.
Our trip to 'look at' a young stallion, in the Yarra Valley, resulted in the purchase of not one pony like we had planned. We ended up coming home with a colt and a section A and section B filly! The "Welsh Bug" had bitten.
Our stud had started in earnest with the acquisition of these three ponies. Very soon after the handsome Welsh Mountain - Section A, Multi Supreme Champion stallion Glynyarra Beacon, arrived to head our team. I had previously shown Beacon in hand and under saddle, and it was literally a dream come true when he was offered to us.
Our small stud grew from its humble beginnings as we purchased more quality mares, which in turn produced lovely foals for us. We are very proud of our current family of precious ponies and wait in anticipation when a foal is born.
Our breeding programme concentrates on true to type, conformationally sound, big moving, beautiful natured ponies, adding that these should be individuals which would survive and not look out of place if let loose on the 'Welsh Hills'.
We ultimately believe in complying with the standard as published by Australia’s parent society, the WP&CS UK.
Trends and fashions have no place in our stud. You will not see a pretty palomino or buckskin or an extreme dishy head here unless it is part of an all-round package. Nor will you see young-stock which resembles mature adult ponies. We do not agree in sacrificing a pony’s future soundness just for the sake of a ribbon in the young-stock classes. All of our youngsters are now fed on balanced diets created on Feed XL.
We have always maintained the theory that the older lines of the first imported ponies and their direct descendants produce the best examples of the breed. Every pony who formed the basis of our stud can be found with parents or at least grandparents entered within the first six volumes of The Australian Welsh Studbook.
We strongly admire the lines of Coed Coch Stud (UK) and Nattai Stud (AUS), so when an additional sire was sought we purchased the Nattai/Coed Coch bred colt 'Dallu Sunburst'.
Over the past six years we have only bred five foals so in 2014 with no foals of our own due yet again and after some lengthy discussions between Chantelle and I we decided to add a little colour to our stud, although still adhering to the ‘all-round package’ requirement.
We made the decision to obtain a much admired perlino Welsh Mountain Stallion ‘Wattles Lemon Crème’. And just so you don’t think that we are “Crazy Colour Breeders” he would still have been here if he was chestnut! What a divine front he has on him!
Welsh Mountain Ponies are the nucleus of our stud, however we still occasionally produce big boned Welsh Ponies and pony and Galloway sized part-breds out of Arabian, ASH and Australian Pony and part Welsh mares. We hope you enjoy looking through our site, we have put many hours into it, and we are very proud of our beautiful Welshies. We would also like to wish those people who have bought Oceana Park ponies over the years the best of luck into the future, with continued success in whatever field you have chosen.
